Dinner At The Bar is a series that started with date night. After a long week, my husband and I like to unwind with good food and drinks, and we discovered there is something magical about sitting at the bar. There is an intimacy and casualness about it, and perched high on our chairs, we can see all of the action. It’s become our weekly ritual.
Since we moved our office to Chelsea- around the corner from Barneys, Fred’s has become one of our go-to bars for after work cocktails and appetizers which usually ends up being dinner because there are so many we love.
It’s one of my favorite designed bars with its Onyx countertop and mid century style, velvet stools that swivel. It is refined and fancy, but also completely comfortable. There is always good people watching too as it is located within the fashion destination of the neighborhood, but I have to say, the vibe is actually quiet after work so you don’t have to worry about it being a scene. There is usually just enough people to make it interesting.
Freds is really a modern day bistro, serving refined American and Italian dishes that use local farm ingredients. My absolute favorite are the zucchini chips. I cannot believe I love a vegetable this much. They are light and crispy, and absolutely delish. This is a hard one to share. Other great dishes are the tuna tartar, hen and wild mushrooms, Belgian french fries – a favorite of many, and really any of their pastas. Everything is super fresh, flavorful and tends to be on the light side which is always a plus.
